It produces small brown cones and has an estimated life span of 1,200 years and is very similar to Tsuga Canadensis, with very slight differences. Historically, Native North Americans heated the branches in steam baths called sweat lodges. By boiling the twigs and cones in maple syrup, they also made a type of beer.
